Overview
The Navitimer is a pilot's chronograph built around a circular slide rule: a rotating bezel and fixed scale that together perform the multiplication and division a pilot needed for fuel burn, airspeed, climb rate, and unit conversion. It is one of very few watches whose most distinctive visual feature is a working calculating instrument rather than a styling decision.
History & Context
Breitling had already put a logarithmic slide rule on a chronograph with the Chronomat of 1942, and the Navitimer — a contraction of "navigation" and "timer" — developed that idea into a dedicated pilot's instrument from 1952, working in partnership with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The earliest examples were made for AOPA members rather than sold openly, and AOPA-signed dials from that period are a recognised vintage collecting category.
The slide rule was a genuine cockpit tool in the era before electronic flight computers, which is the reason the dial is as dense as it is — legibility was traded for function in a way that would be difficult to justify in a watch designed today.

Reference 806, released in 1956 once Breitling began selling the Navitimer beyond AOPA membership, is the classic vintage Navitimer and a distinct collecting field of its own; it used a manually wound Venus 178 chronograph movement into the early 1970s. Modern production centres on the B01 chronograph in three case sizes, alongside variants with different dial and register configurations, and the Cosmonaute with its 24-hour dial.
The Navitimer range has been restructured more than once, so confirm the reference against the individual example rather than relying on the model name.
Case, Movement & Materials
The case carries a bidirectional rotating bezel driving the outer slide-rule scale, read against the fixed scale printed on the dial flange. Modern production uses the in-house Calibre B01, introduced in 2009: an automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 70-hour power reserve, and COSC-certified as a chronometer.
The slide rule itself is printed and engraved rather than mechanical, so its condition is a matter of legibility rather than function.
Buying Considerations
The Navitimer's dial is busy by design, and that density makes dial condition and print quality unusually easy to assess on close inspection — and unusually easy to misjudge from a low-resolution photograph. Vintage examples with AOPA signatures, and the various period dial configurations, differ in ways that matter and are frequently misdescribed.
The bezel action is worth checking directly: the slide rule is the model's defining feature, and a bezel that does not rotate smoothly and hold position is a functional fault rather than cosmetic wear.
Ownership Considerations
At 43mm with a wide bezel and a dense dial, the Navitimer is a large and visually busy watch, and legibility at a glance is genuinely lower than on a plain chronograph — a deliberate consequence of the slide rule. As an automatic chronograph, its servicing profile is that of a complicated watch.
